L’Orto botanico nacque nel 1758, ricavandolo dai giardini ducali,
nell’ambito del governo di Francesco III, che mirava a dotare la città
di un’istruzione universitaria di livello europeo, secondo le linee che si
condensarono nella rifondazione dell’Università nel 1772. Fu inizial-
mente affidato al medico Gaetano Rossi, che era tenuto a svolgere una
lezione un giorno alla settimana, all’interno delle letture della facoltà
di Medicina dello Studio Pubblico. Inizialmente, nell’Orto Botanico
si coltivavano principalmente i “semplici” utilizzati in ambito medico.
Nel 1765 venne istituita un’apposita cattedra di Botanica, sempre en-
tro la facoltà di Medicina, mentre nel 1772 anche l’Orto Botanico fu
compreso nel complessivo riordino degli studi universitari. La cattedra
di Botanica fu affidata nel 1773 al lorenese Robert de Laugier, fino
ad allora docente a Vienna, che modificò la disposizione delle piante
in coltura, suddividendole in indigene ed esotiche e adottando per le
famiglie l’ordinamento secondo Tournefort, mentre per le altre suddi-
visioni tassonomiche si fece riferimento a Linneo.
Le piante coltivate presso l’Orto - sia erbacee che legnose - nell’in-
sieme forniscono un’esauriente rappresentazione della biodiversità del
regno vegetale. In relazione alle diverse esigenze fisio-ecologiche ed

The Botanical Gardens were built in 1758, the place of the former
ducal gardens, within the government of Francesco III who wanted
to offer the city a university education at European level, according to
the guidelines summarised when the University was re-established in
1772. At first, they were assigned to Doctor Gaetano Rossi, in charge
of delivering a lesson once a week within the lectures of the faculty
of Medicine of the Public Study. At the beginning, the “simple plants”
used in medicine were mainly grown in the Botanical Gardens. In
1765, a special chair of Botany was established within the faculty of
Medicine, whereas in 1772 the Botanical Gardens were also included
in the general rearrangement of university studies. In 1773, the chair
of Botany was assigned to Lorraine Robert de Laugier, until then a
professor in Wien, who changed the arrangement of cultivated plants,
dividing them into indigenous and exotic, and adopting the Tourne-
fort classification for families, whereas he referred to Linneo for the
other taxonomic divisions.
Plants grown in the Botanical Gardens - both herbaceous and woody
- all together provide a comprehensive representation of biodiversity
of the plant kingdom. Depending on the various physiological and
ecological needs and on the plant capacity to adapt to environmental

remaining plants are permanently planted in the open air or inside
protected areas, where they also help create exemplary environments
of particularly significant habitats.
