if it were an acropolis dominating on the surrounding area.
The volumes that surround the courtyard appear lighter in contrast
to the heavy, perimeter wall as they’re made of metal and glass. The
colours chosen for the building recall the colours of the yards waiting
greenery and the grey-green colours of the plantations.
The final result is a complex composed by 4 bodies, which define two
big courtyards that open towards the historical centre and from which
the life of the Department and the activities carried out can be ob-
served. A pedestal – one-floor high – houses two additional courtyards,
overlooked by the classrooms.
Compared to the compact pedestal, the building is given light on the
main floor thanks to the courtyard opening. Moreover, there is also
light thanks to the alternation of full and empty zones on via Campi,
because of the stoneware-covered wall, interrupted only by the pres-
ence of windows.
The system that includes courtyards, green areas, staircases and ter-
races is completed by the presence of cycle and pedestrian paths that
are connected with the city centre and with the Via Campi-Via Araldi
Campus, promoting, both recreation and study.
The building has four floors and a basement; there are two stairways at
the entrance, both leading to the terrace, one from via Campi and one
from via Braghiroli.
On the first floor, the entrance is characterised by an atrium, which
starts a system of connections, composed by a large gallery on two
levels with two big stairways in order to help students’ outflow. The
classrooms open onto the galleries. On the first floor the front-office,
administration offices, some studios and part of the education laborato-
ries can also all be found. On the second floor there are professors and
Phd students’ offices, while on the third floor there are research labo-
ratories. A students’ area, specialist rooms, a storeroom, and a changing
