Mirandola’s technopole – also named TPM and dedicated to the
memory of Mario Veronesi, who was the founder and the creator
of Mirandola’s Biomedical District – was established thanks to the
funding of the Emilia Romagna Region and of the Democenter
Foundation, while the incubator was financed by Mirandola’s Cassa
di Risparmio. It is located in the building provided by Mirandola’s
Municipality.
It was designed and put forward by the enterprises of Mirando-
la’s territory, together with the University of Modena and Reggio
Emilia, the Democenter and local institutions, right after the 2012
earthquake.
The building – which is managed by the Democenter Foundation
– was inaugurated in January 10, 2015 and it focuses its activities
on the Biomedical field. It was completely made out of wood; it
represents an example of sustainability, energy efficiency, anti-seis-
mic security and flexibility in the organisation of the spaces. It is
developed on two floors, for an overall gross area of almost 900
square miles. Moreover, thanks to the use of wood, it was possible
to increase the total area by over 55 square miles than initially men-
tioned in the application for tenders. The use of wooden load-bear-
ing elements allowed for the reduction of the area occupied by walls
of almost the 12% compared to the gross area. It was also possible
to reach incredible results in the field of energy efficiency thanks to
the thermal characteristics of the building’s outer layer. The struc-
ture is compact but well proportioned, with a façade with a width
of 28 m and a depth of 16 m.
The aim of creating the Technopole was to boost the relations be-
tween companies, University and the Region. In the Centre there
were laboratories of toxicology, proteomics and biological micros-
copy, as well as materials, sensors and systems relocated. It presents
