This rule provides norms and modalities concerning the support of
animals used for experimental or other scientific purposes, while re-
stating the necessity to implement the so-called “Three-R” principle,
implying “Replacement” (referring to the use of alternative methods),
“Reduction” (that is, the exploitation of as few animals as possible),
and “Refinement” (i.e. procedural and technical enhancements). The
overall aim is that of contributing to scientific quality by always adopt-
ing an attitude of safeguard and respect towards animal species.
The Centre carries out its activities in compliance with the OPBA’s
competences , the authority established to protect the animals at issue

(in line with Art. 25 of the Legislative Decree No. 26/2014 and in the
context of the implementation of the Regional Law No. 20, August 1,
2002).
The Centre’s services are made available, upon request, to the whole
teaching and technical staff, researchers and other scientific operators
of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Scientific members
of other institutions are granted permission to access the Centre as
well, provided that a Convention has been previously stipulated with
the University and that specific requirements defined by current and
internal regulations are met. Besides, upon fulfilment of such require-
ments, activities on behalf of third parties can be managed too.
The CSSI is divided into two main divisions. The first one is known as
“Sezione del Policlinico” Policlinico Division (or “Polistab”), located
at 71, Via del Pozzo, and hosts small rodents, lagomorphs and large-
sized animals in a conventional context.
The other is the “Sezione del Comparto Biologico” (Biology Divi-
sion) (also known as “Biostab”), which is based at 287, Via Campi,
and presents itself as SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) division, as cer-
