ebbe luogo quando nel 1547 il Comune di Modena poté aprire con il
permesso del Duca un bando per due posti per la cosiddetta “borsa di
Parigi”. L’origine risiedeva in un’opera pia fondata due secoli prima da
alcuni ecclesiastici, fra i quali un certo Francesco dell’Ospitale, che nel
1333 aveva destinato alcuni locali nella capitale francese ad accogliere
studenti italiani poveri, intenzionati a frequentare i corsi di teologia o
arti liberali a Parigi. Tre posti erano riservati agli studenti modenesi.
Quelli descritti sin qui non furono però che tentativi di mantenere in
vita un’istituzione che, in parte osteggiata dal potere ducale, in parte
funestata dalle ricorrenti difficoltà economiche del Comune, non riuscì
mai a riprendersi efficacemente. Nel 1577 si provò a dare vita a una
sorta di nuovo Studium, con la nomina, appunto, di due Riformatori
dello Studio e l’avvio di lezioni stabili di Umanità, di Leggi – ordinaria
e straordinaria – e di Instituta, le prime da tenersi nel Palazzo comunale,
l’ultima nella casa privata del lettore. Già nel 1590, tuttavia, la Comunità
di Modena fu costretta a decretare la sospensione di tutte le letture a
partire dall’anno seguente, a causa dei consueti impedimenti finanziari.
Fu solo sul finire del XVI secolo che la situazione subì un mutamen-
to significativo: nel 1597 il duca Alfonso II d’Este morì senza lasciare
eredi. Al trono salì suo cugino Cesare, con una successione, in linea
non diretta, che alimentò le rivendicazioni della Curia pontificia: il
pontefice aveva ripetutamente chiarito di volere riannettere il feudo
di Ferrara ai propri domini qualora gli Estensi non avessero potuto
dare prosecuzione alla linea di Alfonso II. Nel 1598, si giunse così alla
devoluzione di Ferrara allo Stato Pontificio, con un conseguente tra-
sferimento della capitale estense a Modena. In questo nuovo scenario
riprese quota il progetto di una riapertura dello Studium, nonostante
le mutue diffidenze fra la Corte ducale e il Comune, ora chiamati a
convivere fianco a fianco nella stessa città.

1547, when the Commune of Modena could put, with the Duke’s
permission, a notice for two places in the so-called “bag of Paris”. It
was a charitable organization founded two centuries before by some
ecclesiastics, among those a certain Francesco dell’Ospitale, who in
1333 assigned some apartments to accommodate poor Italian students,
that wanted to attend theology or liberal arts courses in Paris. Three
seats were reserved to Modena students.
The events described above, were only attempts to maintain alive an
institution that didn’t success to recover effectively; that’s why it was
partly contested by the Ducal power and partly ravaged by the recurring
economical difficulties of the Commune. In 1577, it was tried to found
again a sort of new Studium, with the nomination, precisely, of two Re-
formers of the Studium and with the start of stabile lectures of Human-
ity, Laws – ordinary and extraordinary – and Instituta: the first ones had
to be given in the Communal Palace, the last one had to be given in the
private house of the reader. Already in 1590, however, the Community
of Modena must decree the suspension of the entire readings that should
start the following year; that was caused by the usual financial problems.
Only at the end of the XVI century, the situation changed significant-
ly: in 1597, the duke Alfonso II d’Este died leaving no heirs. A cousin
of him, Cesare, ascended the throne with a not direct succession that
caused the claims of the pontifical Curia: the pope had repeatedly clar-
ified that he wanted to annex again the Ferrara feud to his possessions,
if the Este family couldn’t give a prosecution to the line of Alfonso II.
In 1598, Ferrara was transferred to the Papal Stat with a consequent
moving of the Este capital to Modena. In this new scenery, the pro-
ject of a re-opening of the Studium climbed again, despite the mutual
mistrusts between the ducal Court and the Commune, that were now
called to live together alongside in the same city.
