It is in the middle of the century that aspects of immediate practical
usefulness gained more importance, as the law matters relative to the in-

course given by Bartolomeo Federzoni in 1741-42.
An important element for the development of legal studies was the insti-
tution of the chair of Criminal Law, thanks to a big legacy of Giuseppe
Maria Bondigli in 1757.
For the institution of the new professorship it was important the in-
teresting of the Duke Francesco III in person, who intervened by the
Conservatives of the city of Modena, entrusting them with the mandate
to reach an agreement with the San Carlo priests for this purpose.
Bondigli assigned then to the Community of Modena a legacy of 10.700
lire value, which annual income (equal to 500 lire) was destined to pay
the reader of another chair, the one of Public Law. The first reader of
Public Law was Bartolomeo Valdrighi, who would had a significant role
