differenziati e più “specialistici”: si tennero lezioni De morbis toraci, De
morbis capitis, De morbis mulierum, De morbis infantium, o addirittura De
chylificatione et de hominis procreatione e De sanguinis circulatione, mentre si
sviluppavano nel corso del secolo lo studio della farmacologia e della
fisiologia.
Altri insegnamenti
L’area disciplinare definita genericamente “filosofica” conobbe la pre-
senza di insegnamenti a base volontaria e di cattedre la cui esistenza
non coprì l’intera durata dello Studio Pubblico.
Dal 1713 al 1752, con alcuni intervalli dovuti alle assenze da Modena
per il servizio della Casa ducale, lo Studio ebbe in Pietro Ercole Ghe-
rardi un duraturo e appassionato docente di lingua ebraica e lingua
greca. Il sacerdote ed erudito modenese, allievo e collaboratore di Lo-
dovico Antonio Muratori, precettore di corte e vice-bibliotecario della
Biblioteca Estense, tenne il corso in forma volontaria e senza alcun
emolumento.
Una materia la cui docenza ebbe andamento discontinuo, almeno nei
primi decenni di vita dello Studio, fu poi la matematica, insegnamento
nel quale, per tutto il Settecento, ebbe un ruolo centrale la geometria
euclidea: la cattedra fu formalmente istituita solo nel 1728 – stipendiata
dalla Comunità – e venne occupata consecutivamente da tre compo-
nenti della famiglia Vandelli.
Altri corsi la cui presenza fu sporadica furono quelli di Geometria,
Meccanica e Idrostatica, tenuti da Giovanni Battista Boccabadati, auto-
re di una preziosa carta di Modena con i suoi canali. Vi furono anche
lezioni di Idraulica, tenute da Francesco Vandelli, e un corso di Ar-
chitettura militare svolto nel 1761-62 dal bolognese Giuseppe Davia,
comandante delle truppe ducali.

developed and started to inspire to a more current conception, with a
more articulated study of the pathologies: this is proved by the presence of
differentiated and more “specialist” courses: there were lectures of De mor-
bis toraci, De morbis capitis, De morbis mulierum, De morbis infantium, or even
De chylificatione et de hominis procreatione and De sanguinis circulatione, while
during the century the pharmacology and physiology were developing.
Other teachings
The disciplinary area generically defined “philosophical” had teachings
on voluntary base and chairs, which existence didn’t cover the whole
duration of the Public Studium. From 1713 to 1752, with some in-
tervals due to the absences of Modena because of the service of the
Ducal House, the Studium had Pietro Ercole Gherardi as a lasting and
keen professor of Hebraic and Greek language. He was priest and man
of culture from Modena, pupil and collaborator of Lodovico Antonio
Muratori, court preceptor and vice-librarian by the Este Library and he
taught the course voluntary and without any salary.
A subject which learning was discontinuous, at least in the first decades of
life of the Studium, was then mathematics, teaching in which, for all the
eighteenth century, the Euclidean geometry had a crucial importance: the
chair was formally instituted only in 1728 – at the Community expens-
es – and was consecutively held by three members of the Vandelli family.
Other courses with a sporadic presence were the ones of Geometry,
Mechanics and Hydrostatics, that were taught by Giovanni Battista Boc-
cabadati, author of a precious chart of Modena with its channels. There
were also lectures of Hydraulics, that were held by Francesco Vandelli,
and a course of Military Architecture taught in 1761-62 by Giuseppe
Davia from Bologna, commander of the ducal troops.
