Institute of Biology, now part of the Life Science
Department
In 1963, soon after the construction of the Casa dello Studente, Mode-
na’s Municipality agreed to the construction of the building intended
to be the Institute of Biology. It was designed by the engineer Remi-
gio Casolari – like the Casa dello Studente – and completed in 1966.
The ‘F’ structured building is characterised by exposed red bricks and a
concrete structure. The façade overlooks via Campi, but it is not com-
pletely in line with the street, in fact it is characterised by an indentation
followed by an avant-corps, that interrupts the window sequence em-
bedded in the concrete structure. The line gap is highlighted by the dif-
ference in the surface treatments: on one hand there are exposed bricks
on the linear part of the left façade, while the overhanging indentation
is covered with non-rendered concrete. The wide entrance staircase is
located in an overhanging position compared to the building’s line.
The façade’s treatment of exposed red bricks was reproduced in the
southern area of the building. Here, the red brick wall is interrupted
in three points throughout its height by vertical bands covered with
non-rendered concrete, the last of which is located at the end of the
building. The need of an extension was only relevant in subsequent
years; for this reason another building was built, again characterised by
red bricks, in continuity with the south part of the structure.
Institutes of Chemistry and Pharmacy
The building construction of Institutes of Chemistry and Pharmacy
was authorised in 1964. The layout of the building overlooking via Cam-
pi is spread over two parallel blocks joined by two corridors, which create
a central court. Throughout the years, other elements were added, and so
