Centro di Medicina Rigenerativa “Stefano Ferrari” | “Stefano Ferrari” Regenerative Medicine Centre 305
The ‘Stefano Ferrari’ Regenerative Medicine Centre (CMR – Cen-
tro di Medicina Rigenerativa) at the University of Modena and Reggio
Emilia has established itself as a Center of excellence in the interna-
tional research field of Epithelial Stem Cell Characterisation and clini-
cal application in both Cellular and Gene therapies. All of this was pos-
sible thanks to the top-level instrumentation and the accurate work of
European regulation conformity related to GMP certification (Good
Manufacturing Practice – AIFA authorization n. aM - 169/2014).
The birth of the CMR has its roots in the creation of the first Ital-
ian Faculty of Biosciences and Biotechnologies, whose foundation was
strongly promoted by Professor Stefano Ferrari – the person behind
the name of the Centre. Full Professor of Biochemistry from 1994 and
Rector of the Faculty from 2005 (year of its foundation) to his prema-
ture passing in 2008, Professor Ferrari also had the merit of opening
the University to a pool of world-renowned researchers and professors
in the field of Stem Cell and Cellular and Genic therapy.
The different specialisations of the Centre’s scientific team, currently
hosting more than 100 researchers, biotechnicians, technicians and
various collaborators, are integrated with multi-disciplinary com-
petences required by Regenerative Medicine studies. With the aim
of transferring the advanced scientific results to a customised medi-
cal approach, the Centre also hosts the university spin-off ‘Holostem
terapie avanzate’. It is focused on GMP production of products for
advanced therapies developed by CMR, as well as the clinical imple-
mentation of advanced therapies on adult Stem Cell developed from
the academic research.
The CMR also houses the interdepartmental Stem Cell and Regener-
ative Medicine Centre, accredited by the Region as a laboratory of the
Life Science Platform of Emilia Romagna’s high technology network.
The network was born to guarantee a research offer on the territory that
