credit of commissioning the decorative works in the main premises of
the Collegio to a group of artists including Giuseppe Dallamano, Gior-
gio Magnanini, Marco Bianchi, Antonio Consetti, and Francesco Vellani.
The extension of the building started in 1732 with the addition of casa
Bellicini and part of the Osteria del Montone (on Via Emilia) to the Mari-
ani’s property, which had already been acquired in 1701. The extension
allowed the construction of the Collegio’s Theatre. In 1744 also Casa Az-
zani – at the corner of Corso Canalgrande – was included. Moreover, the
acquisition of the remaining part of Osteria del Montone in 1745 led to
the construction of 5 additional spans to the porch in Via Emilia.
In 1744 the properties of Vandelli and Bettoli were acquired, and part
of these buildings were later to be earmarked to the University. These
buildings were added to Casa Azzani and so completed the front on Via
Emilia. As a matter of fact, thanks to the direction of Pietro Termanini, the
façade and the porch were complemented by the already existing ones
that had been built in the previous century by Avanzini and Loraghi.
In 1763, the decorative sculptor Pietro Puttini, who came from Vero-
na, created new marble columns, which were more uniform than the
already existing ones. In 1764 Termanini could write the final report
on the project, assuring the conformity of the works carried out with
respect to the project initially commissioned by the Congregation.
Additional extensions to the Collegio dei Nobili were added between
1732 and 1772, such as the construction of a new room near the church,
connected to the vestry and used as a Parish Hall. Another example is
the building of the Library along the area near Galleria d’Onore (Gallery
of Honour), which is parallel to Via San Carlo.
Part of these transformations were carried out as a result of the raising
needs coming from the reformation process of the University, to which
many portions of the Collegio complex were assigned.
