e il 1874, per essere poi ripresi e conclusi tra il 1888 e il 1890, secondo
il progetto presentato molti anni prima dal Costa (morto nel 1876) e
dal Razzaboni. Il progetto prevedeva, sul prospetto di via San Carlo, una
fascia a bugnato limitatamente al primo ordine, ancor oggi esistente.
Interventi successivi hanno riguardato: il portale d’ingresso su via San
Carlo progettato ed eseguito in marmo rosso di Verona dall’ingegnere
Ignazio Bernabei (1823-1909) nel 1903; il Teatro (pesantemente com-
promesso dal crollo del soffitto nel 1929); lo scalone (con la sostituzio- (1823-1909) – in 1903; the Theatre, strongly compromised in 1929 by the

Uber Ferrari; la sostituzione della pavimentazione della Galleria d’O-
nore e della Sala dei Cardinali con commesse di marmo.
Il Novecento
Nell’immediato dopoguerra furono eseguiti solo i primi urgentissimi
interventi resi necessari a seguito dei bombardamenti aerei, mentre
l’ultimo vasto progetto di restauro si è avuto negli anni Settanta ad
opera degli architetti Cesare Leonardi e Francesca Stagi, che si de-
dicarono al restauro della chiesa di San Carlo e al riadattamento del
Collegio alle sue nuove funzioni culturali con uno specifico intervento
per la biblioteca che trae la sua origine dall’antica libreria della Con-
gregazione della Beata Vergine e San Carlo di Modena e del Collegio
dei Nobili, il cui patrimonio, a partire dal 1990, è stato ulteriormente
incrementato con opere specialistiche afferenti ai diversi ambiti disci-
plinari della filosofia, della storia, dell’antropologia, delle scienze sociali
e religiose, con una significativa presenza di testi in lingua originale.

were continuously interrupted due to the lack of financial funds. Finally,
the works were resumed and completed in 1890, following the project that
had been presented many years before conjunctly by Costa (died in 1876)
and Rabazzoni. The project included – on the façade of Via San Carlo – a
Bossage band limited to the first order, which still exists.
Further restoration works have included: San Carlo’s entrance portal on Via
San Carlo – made of Verona red marble by the engineer Ignazio Barnabei
collapse of the ceiling; the substitution of the steps and the balustrade of
the big stairway; the addition of new decoration made by the restorer Uber
Ferrari; the substitution of both the Galleria d’Onore and the Sala dei Cardi-
nali’s pavements with marble slabs.
The 20th century
In the aftermath of the Second World War, only the most interventions
were carried out as a consequence of aerial bombardments. The last big
restoration project took place in the 70s by the architects Cesare Leon-
ardi and Francesca Stagi. They focused on the renovation of the church
of San Carlo and on the adaptation of the Collegio to its new cultural
functions though a specific intervention on the library. Its origins trace
its roots back to the ancient library of the Congregazione della beata
Vergine e San Carlo and of the Collegio dei Nobili. From the 1990 on-
wards, the cultural heritage of the library has been incremented thanks
to the inclusion of specialised works belonging to different disciplinary
fields, such as Philosophy, History, Anthropology, Social and Religious
Sciences. Moreover, it boasts the presence of a significant number of
books and works in their original language.
