L’Istituto Zooiatrico, vale a dire la Scuola di Veterinaria con annesso
Museo in San Geminiano fino a quando venne soppressa a seguito
della Riforma Gentile del 1923 e, con l’intervento del prof. Ermene-
gildo Reggiani, fu trasformata nell’Istituto Sperimentale di Zootecnia,
non più legato all’Università, ma con il compito di allevare, a scopo di

Poco prima che l’Istituto Sperimentale di Zootecnia confluisse nell’I-
stituto sperimentale per la Zootecnia una parte considerevole dei pre-
parati del Museo di Veterinaria, tra il 1964 e il 1965, fu acquisita dalla
Scuola di Veterinaria di Parma. Nel 2007 a Parma è stato pubblicato il
catalogo della raccolta del Museo Anatomico Veterinario in cui sono
elencati 121 reperti provenienti dal Museo di Veterinaria di Modena.
In una sala dell’antico convento per tre anni, tra il 1867 e il 1870, ebbe
sede un Teatro dei Dilettanti che assunse il nome di Teatro Sociale, poi

were arranged. Afterwards, thanks to a project by Cesare Costa, the seat
was rearranged through the enlargement of the rooms and an increase
in their functional asset. New rooms were created for the Veterinary
Museum, a spacious hall of 23.50 m x 7.50, as well as for the new of-
fices that were gradually created. Moreover, new stables and premises
was ready in 1846.
The Institute of Veterinary, that is to say the School of Veterinary and
the annexed Museum in San Geminano until its suppression in 1923
after Gentiloni’s reform and, thanks to the intervention of Prof. Erme-
negildo Reggiani, it was transformed into the Experimental Institute
of Zootechnics. No longer connected to the University, it focused on
the task of breeding, for research and selection purposes, local national
and foreign animal breeds and to promote the Modenese and regional
Zootechnics, merged in 1967 into the experimental Zootechnical In-
stitute, based in Rome. Moreover, from 2006, it became research unit
for Pig Breeding of the C.R.A.
Shortly before the merger of the Experimental Zootechnics Institute into
the experimental Institute for Zootechnics, a significant part of the spec-
imens of the Museo di Veterinaria was acquired by the Veterinary School
of Parma between 1964 and 1965. In 2007, the Anatomical Veterinary Mu-
seum’s catalogue of the collection was published in Parma, in which 121
specimens coming from Modena’s Veterinary Museum are listed.
An Amatorial Theatre found its base in an old convent’s hall for the
three years between 1867 and 1870. It took the name of Teatro Sociale,
then Società Filodrammatica Goldoniana.
Since 1870, after necessary restoration and adaptation works were car-
ried out, the Pio Istituto Orfanelle found its base there. It was a charitable
Institution established on August 7, 1868 following the private initia-
tive of a priest, father Pio Sirotti, provost of the San Biagio del Car-
